What is PRESBYOND and Its Benefits?

Presbyond laser blended vision is a treatment for people who have age-related need for reading glasses, known as presbyopia. As we age the natural lens inside our eye loses its flexibility, resulting in loss of the ability for near focusing. The effects of this are usually seen after the age of 40.

Presbyond uses excimer laser to sculpt the cornea and focuses the dominant eye for distance and the non-dominant eye for near sight. It is different to traditional monovision or micro-monovision, as the sophisticated wavefront laser profile expands the depth of focus for each eye. This improves your vision whether you are reading a book or driving a car, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses.

Presbyond laser treatment is suitable for a large proportion of people suffering with presbyopia. Although used primarily to compensate for reading glasses, it can be combined with correction of short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. All patients above the age of 40 could consider combing their Laser Vision Correction with Presbyond laser blended vision.

How PRESBYOND Eye Surgery Works

Our-Clinics

The Procedure

The procedure is almost identical to LASIK; it is painless, although a feeling of pressure on the eyes may be noticed at times. It typically lasts 5-10 minutes for each eye and around 30 minutes for the whole procedure.

During the procedure:
  1. Anaesthetic eye drops are used to numb the eyes.
  2. You will be asked to lie flat on a special laser bed.
  3. A ‘lid speculum’ is fitted to keep your eye open – you will not be able to blink during the procedure.
  4. You will be asked to look into a flashing green light for alignment purposes.
  5. A vacuum ring is placed on your eye whilst the (femto) laser is creating the flap.
  6. You will then be re-positioned to the second (excimer) laser and asked again to focus on a flashing green light.
  7. Your surgeon will then lift the flap and the exposed cornea will be treated (lasered) where minute amounts of cornea are custom removed to match your prescription.
  8. The flap is repositioned.
  9. Antibiotic and steroid drops are instilled into the eye and the ‘lid speculum’ removed.
  10. The procedure and steps are repeated on your other eye.

Recovery

After the procedure you will be taken to your room to rest and the surgeon will check your eyes before you can go home. Most patients will see clearly by the following day. In the initial recovery period there may be a gritty sensation and sensitivity to light may be experienced, this typically lasts 24-48 hours. Care will be needed however for a longer period, e.g. no water in your eyes for 1 week, no swimming or heavy exercise or contact sports for a month.

Before discharge from the laser clinic, drops are given to help keep your eyes moist as well as prevent infection and inflammation. You will continue to administer these at home for the next few weeks. You should arrange for someone to drive you home where you should rest for the remainder of the day.

Follow-up

You will return to the clinic within the first 24-48 hours following the procedure to check on your progress. Your Laser Vision Eye Centre surgeons, David or Aris, will conduct this check up. ‘You will also have check ups at 1-2 weeks and 3 months.

PRESBYOND FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions about PRESBYOND Eye Surgery

Presbyond® laser blended vision is an innovative treatment for presbyopia, the need for reading glasses, designed to address the challenges of ageing eyes. This technique utilises laser eye surgery to create a unique correction for both distance and near vision. During the laser procedure, an excimer laser and a femtosecond laser are employed to reshape the cornea of the eye, allowing the dominant eye to focus on distant and intermediate objects while the non-dominant eye is adjusted for near and intermediate vision, effectively reducing the need for reading glasses.
This refractive surgery is performed by an experienced eye surgeon at specialised vision clinics like the Laser Vision Eye Centre, where patients can expect a thorough eye treatment plan tailored to their individual needs. The laser surgery not only corrects astigmatism and presbyopia but also enhances binocular vision, enabling individuals to see clearly without glasses or contact lenses. Post-treatment, patients receive eye drops to aid recovery, ensuring optimal results.
Laser blended vision, known as Presbyond® laser blended vision, is a revolutionary laser vision correction technique designed to address the effects of ageing on the eye, particularly presbyopia. This condition affects the eye as it gradually loses its ability to focus on near objects due to the natural ageing process. The Presbyond surgery adjusts each eye for optimal distance vision and near vision, allowing one eye to be dominant for distance while the other focuses more on near tasks.
Typically, the results of laser treatment can last many years, but individual outcomes may vary depending on factors such as the refractive prescription of the eye and overall eye health. For some, additional procedures like enhancement of the laser procedure, lens exchange or lens implant may be necessary years after the procedure if vision changes occur over time. Patients can expect a much greater depth of vision after undergoing Presbyond laser surgery at a high quality eye clinic or eye hospital.
LASIK and Presbyond are both popular options for vision correction, but they serve different purposes. LASIK is primarily designed for optimising and enhancing distance vision, allowing individuals to achieve clear vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses. In contrast, Presbyond is a laser eye surgery technique that is designed to specifically address presbyopia, a condition that affects the eye for near vision as we all age.
Presbyond® laser blended vision adjusts each eye, creating a seamless transition between distance and near vision. This presbyopia correction is achieved through the use of femtosecond and excimer laser technology, which effectively addresses the refractive needs of the eye (short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism) and also presbyopia using a sophisticated wavefront optimisation of micro-monovision. Many vision correction clinics are now offering this innovative solution, as it can make vision much more effective for those struggling with both distance and near vision. Presbyond and Presbymax are advanced treatments for presbyopia, a condition that affects the eye as it ages. While both procedures aim to enhance vision, they differ in their approach and effectiveness. Presbyond utilises a femtosecond laser to create a customised treatment plan that addresses the specific needs of the patient, aiming to make one eye more adept for distance vision and the other for near vision. In contrast, the laser blended vision procedure of Presbymax focuses on achieving a seamless range of vision that is much more effective for daily activities.
Overall, while both Presbyond and Presbymax offer solutions for treatment for presbyopia, the choice between them may depend on individual visual needs and lifestyle preferences. The laser blended vision procedure is much better suited for those looking for a comprehensive solution to their vision challenges.

PRESBYOND LASIK is a small procedure and as such carries a small risk. This is the main disadvantage of PRESBYOND compared to having no treatment and thus continuing to wear glasses. The risk is very small, under 1 in a 1000 of poorer vision. However, laser eye surgery is still safer than wearing contact lenses. In addition, PRESBYOND LASIK is a preferable option to lens replacement surgery.

Presbyopia literally refers to the age-related loss of near vision, typically beginning in the early to mid-40s. As the eye begins to lose its ability to focus on close objects, individuals often seek solutions. One popular approach is Monovision, where one eye is adjusted for distance vision while the non-dominant eye for near vision. In contrast, the technique called Presbyond utilises a wavefront optimised femtosecond laser to sculpt the cornea, creating a laser blended vision that allows for a more seamless transition between distances. This means that vision correction surgery with Presbyond LASIK offers distance, intermediate and reading vision that is much more effective than older laser platforms.
The advantage of Presbyond lies in its ability to harmonise vision across all distances, making it a superior solution for presbyopia. As the eye is adjusted to focus on various distances, patients can enjoy an improved quality of life without the need for glasses or contact lenses. This innovative laser eye treatment not only addresses the challenges of developing presbyopia but also enhances overall visual performance, making it a desirable option for many seeking independence from corrective eyewear.

LVEC - Am I Suitable Quiz? UPDATED

Unfortunately, laser eye surgery isn't right for you at the moment.

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists recommends that in order to have laser eye surgery you must be over 18 years of age and have a stable glasses prescription. This is normally defined as no change greater than 0.5 units (0.5D) in the last two years. The reason is that your eyes continue to develop until you're 21 or 22 so your prescription may change between now and then which affects how we perform laser eye surgery too.Â

An absolute dream
Aris and team made the whole procedure from start to finish an absolute dream. All questions answered in a language that anyone could understand, more detail given when requested. Calming even during the procedure. Appointments ran fairly late, so could go outside of work hours and travel. Everything was efficient, didn't have to chase, they handled all the faff around COVID like champs. Don't forget to enter your reg number on arrival to the hospital though!

My whol experience has been superb
I am today the morning after having completed presbyond surgery and I am absolutely delighted. The actual surgery was nothing to worry about and is completely pain free. I have spent my first night with slightly fuzzy vision and mildly gritty eyes but this really was the only side effect. This morning I opened my eyes to vision better than I can ever remember and on having my first check with Mr. Anderson it was confirmed I have 20/20 vision.

The ‘Gold Standard’ of laser eye surgery
Mr David Anderson is one of the leading Consultant Ophthalmologists which is why I chose him to perform my surgery. During the consultation I was very much assured that I was in good hands, but also having the ‘Gold Standard’ of laser eye surgery. It was explained that my best option was LASEK due to an eye infection rendering me contact lens intolerant. This also left me with a slightly reduced tear film... read more about our Google Reviews.

I now have better than 20/20 vision
From start to finish, Mr Anderson and his team were wonderful!! Mr Anderson always took his time, explained every clearly and was happy to answer any questions. I now have better than 20/20 vision - and no more glasses 🙂 I would recommend Mr Anderson to anyone looking into laser eye surgery!

I wish I hadn't waited so long
Following an injury to my cornea that never healed properly, I had phototherapeutic keratectomy. At all stages I have had the chance to ask plenty of questions and have been given balanced information. The procedure itself was done with great efficiency and professionalism from both the medical and nursing staff. Aftercare has also been good and I am entirely satisfied. I only wish I hadn't waited so long to have it done!

Cannot recommend enough
The process was completely painless and quick. Any concerns you have to do with treatment whether it be the treatment itself, the aftercare... Dr Anderson will explain in detail and with patience. Also your are looked after so well by the nurses just before and after your treatment, they honestly couldn't do more to help you feel comfortable and relaxed. You are booked in for follow up treatments after your surgery and you feel like they really do care about how your eyes are and how much better your vision is, which is an incredible difference ,you feel like you aren't just a customer who they want in and out.
Graham Charlesworth
I have been thoroughly impressed
I have been thoroughly impressed with the level of care and professionalism that Aris and his team have shown at all stages in the process. The initial assessment, the procedure itself and then follow-up consultations. Although this was something that I approached with much trepidation I am really happy with the way that it ended up and the path that I followed.
